Bob Frandsen Flies
Dee Wings. One method The fly is a Grey Eagle
First make sure that the area for the wing to sit is without bumps and more or less level with the roots of the hackle .
Wax a length of tying thread very thoroughly.
Select your slips of suitable wing material. In this case white mottled turkey with white tips and stroke into the finished shape that you require.
Make a loop in the thread with a simple overhand knot taking the end through twice.
Measure your wing slip for length
and slip loop over at the desired point pulling the loop up as close as without distorting the feather. Shiny or underside must be facing up.
Holding the feather flat between thumb and forefinger with the long end of the thread held firmly by your little finger pull the short end with your other hand to tighten the loop
The white thread is very hard to see in this pic.
Complete with another single overhand knot to finish
Trim waste ends of thread and repeat with the other wing
Trim waste ends of thread and repeat with the other wing
Tie far side wing in position on top of the shank
and bend the waste ends away from yourself out of the of the roots of the second wing
Tie in near side wing against the far side one
A couple of turns and a half-hitch to hold in place.
A drop of varnish on the wing roots and finish off head

I`ve used Peacock fluff on this fly. I`ve found peacock to be the closest thing to the real thing in texture and it dyes up pretty much the same. Only difference being that it is greyish rather than brownish as the real McCoy

An FAQ
First up select two slips of Mallard from near the butt end of the feather with plenty of grey roots leaving attached to the quill. Not many to a feather. 3 perhaps and 4 if you are lucky. No grey no bend!!
Tie each side in separately pointing skywards
Tie each side in separately pointing skywards
like this and stroke together. They will get a bit of a grip on each other which helps when forming their shape. They seem to help each other
Grasping them by the butt ends, stroke them back to the rear bending as you go
Moving your grip to the rear as you proceed
A little bit of spit on the ends will help those last little cantankerous bits stay in place
Hopefully it will look like this
And this. If done properly it should stay put
Remember no grey . no bend
